Changes in Latitude....

Globe clip art
These changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes,
Nothing remains quite the same.
Through all of the islands and all of the highlands,
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane.

When we moved from the northern hemisphere to the southern, from the USA to Ecuador, we definitely changed both our latitude and attitude.

But the only constant in life is....change.

We never intended to stay in Ecuador permanently and after analysis, we have met our financial goals. We still have things we want to do in the US, while we have the health to do so. Plus we want to do more travel and it's easier and often cheaper to do it from the US.

So, long story short...we will return to Cuenca in the middle of November as planned. But we will be selling everything and returning to the US and our RV lifestyle at the end of the year.

We will miss the many, many friends we have made but we will be past our two year anniversary and our visas will still be valid (as long as we return every 18 months or less OR unless the rules are changed).

This was not an easy decision but we feel it is the right one for us at this time in our lives. Life is good!

Day Trip to Guayaquil

Passport clip artBecause my passport isn't due to expire until 2019, I wanted to get extra pages added. For those who don't know, after December of this year, that option will no longer be available.

So I made an appointment with the U.S. Consulate in Guayaquil to come in to get that done. I printed out the document needed, read all the FAQs and waited for my appointment day.

Our driver and friend, Emilio Morocho, picked us up at at 7:15, allowing plenty of time to make my 11:45am appointment. We actually arrived at 10:30! I checked in with the first security desk, after being directed there by a very nice female security guard.

I had read to bring in as little as possible, not even a cell phone. So my purse had my wallet, some bathroom necessities (hey, it is Ecuador), my passport and other IDs and my paperwork. The only thing that caused a question was my little single use Wet Ones.

But the lady guard told me that she would hold it for me - not that I was worried. LOL! From there I was pointed to another desk with my purse in a plastic bin. The bin was passed through an I walked through a scanner, then was wanded. The bin was now moved to another counter inside where I was able to claim it and was directed to the next stopping point. There the Ecuadorians were in a line but I was sent inside the next building. Here my purse was once again inspected and although I walked through some type of scanner, the beep wasn't an alert. I was directed to a window to get helped.

Yes, here I am an hour early, everyone has been very pleasant and helpful, laughing at my Spanish. No hassles, nothing like I had heard from others. The clerk motioned me up when he was free. He spoke excellent English, he took my papers and passport and handed me a paper to take two windows over to pay my $82. There a nice lady took my money and gave me two receipts (I did have correct change but could have used a credit card).

Back to the first window where I turn in the receipts and am told that my passport will be ready in 25-30 minutes. And it was! I took my newly fatten passport, my task completed an hour early. I had forgotten about my single use Wet Ones but the guard hadn't. She saw me exiting the building and handed it back to me. Talk about service!! Thank you to all the staff there!

From there we headed into downtown Guayaquil for lunch and a little sightseeing. We stopped at Chifa Dinastia for a lunch of Chinese food. Stu had shrimp and broccoli, I had chicken and broccoli and here is what Emilio ordered!

Stuffed, with a container of leftovers, we strolled back towards the parking garage. We made a stop at the Guayaquil Iguana Park - what a treat! They're on the ground, in the trees and plants. Here are a few photos:

Here are some photos of the park as well as our walk along the malecon before we left.

Friends, Food and Travel

Moving sure can skew your sense of time! Here it is August already, how did that happen? We have been very busy between our move (DONE), selling items we no longer need (DONE), meeting old and new friends (NEVER STOPS) and attending Spanish classes (TWO MORE WEEKS).

In addition we have been getting ready for our annual trip to the US. We will be gone 2.5 months this time due to taking a two week Southern Caribbean cruise just before our return.

An A-Z Guide to Ecuador's Most Common Produce

Visiting an Ecuadorian mercado (market) for the first time can be quite intimidating. First and foremost, there are so many things you have never seen before.

I saw a link to this on one of the Facebook Expat groups and thought it was worth sharing. Two pages, so be sure to click the NEXT PAGE button at the bottom.

While not comprehensive, missing things like piña (pineapple), manzana (apples), more (blackberries) and frutilla (strawberries), it is a good introduction to fruits you might not recognize.

Successful move!

It's done! We managed to get moved with a minimum of trouble, thanks to Sebastian Espinoza Moving. This is our 4th or 5th exposure to him, a couple moves of things we bought from others and our two major moves. Highly recommended!

We sold our refrigerator and bought another (bigger) used one from friends and we also sold a lot of smaller stuff that we couldn't use (painted bench, rug, heater, dishes, etc). Now we have a bunch of little things left to sell.

Cuenca - it’s like the good ol’ days of the 1950’s

Hola from my little town (400,000 people), high in the Andes (8,200 feet), of a Third World Country (Ecuador, South America).

I’ve heard it said many, many times over the 4+ years I’ve lived here, that living in Cuenca, Ecuador (South America) is like living in the 1950’s.  Why?

Is it because we don’t have internet?  No cell phones?  We watch TV in negro y blanco?  We drive 1958 Chevy Station Wagons?

Mom/Dad actually had one of these, same color config, too.

Getting closer to moving day!

We are less than a week away from our move date and 95% of our "things" are packed. Sort of organized chaos!

4 City Tour: Gualaceo, Chordeleg, Sigsig and San Bartolome

Since we spent so much of our first year here getting settled and not doing much sightseeing, we are trying to visit someplace new (and outside Cuenca) most months. May 29th we went on a four city tour given by our friend Emilio Morocho. He was also our guide on the March day trip involving tequila, friends and water fun!

CAUTION: Photo intensive blog! You can see all the pictures we took in our SmugMug album.

Our friend Joanne spearheaded that trip, this time around it was our turn. We managed to keep 30 people signed up and by nine am on Friday, we were headed out. Emilio decided to reverse the order of the trip so we started in San Bartolome, known for making guitars. Here are some photos from our stop at one of the shops. I bought a basket, a woven pitcher and a flat mat, all for $4.50. Oh, and two folks bought guitars while there - for under $150 each! The guitars can go up to $800!

We also took time to enjoy the friendly Basset Hound, cat and children.

Our next stop was SigSig and the Panama hat factory. Did you know that Panama hats have never been made in Panama? Nope, they are made in Ecuador and exported. Several hats were sold, some of us opting for the $5 pile for fun.

Soon it was time for lunch and we headed to Chordeleg, the town famous for sterling silver jewelry, especially the specific chandelier type of earring. We stopped first for lunch, a good almuerzo with a potato soup first, followed by rice, a few veggies and grilled chicken, topped of with juice and finished with a sweet dessert. Oh, and the hosts were kind enough to bring out a cake for the birthday of one of our group! After lunch folks shopped and walked. I bought three cute little tin plates to hang on our wall, another $12.

From there we proceeded to our last stop. We visited a weaver who works his skills the old way. All the colors come from natural ingredients, all the designs are done by tie-dying (not what you think) and then hand knotting and fingernail designing. It was amazing. Several scarves and shawls were purchased, I opted out already having enough of both.

We were supposed to visit the orchid farm last but they were closed to the public for spraying. Several had hoped to visit the leather workers but time ran out. I suspect there will be another trip just to Gualeco to see the orchids and the leather!
